ADware, SPYware and Viruses.
If you spend any amount of time on the internet, you are putting your computer and its data at risk. Every minute of every day, cyber intruders are attacking, and your computer is a wide open target. Not only do these thieves want your financial information, they also want to use your computer's resources to attack other computers and further their evil plans. By hijacking your system and many others, these hackers make it difficult, if not impossible, for law enforcement to track them down and prosecute them.

The intruders can get into your system by taking advantage of holes in the operating system, through viruses, spyware, malware, Trojan horses and other methods. To beat these intruders, we must use a combination of common sense, firewalls, anti-virus programs and regular system updates.
Here are some proven steps to avoid ADware, SPYware and Viruses:

Don't click on banner Ads or pop-ups
Email-harvesting companies track our habits on the Web extensively using banner ads. Clicking on pop-ups can actually install malicious software on your computer. Click on the small X in the top right of the window or even better Right-Click on the icon button on the taskbar associated with the pop-up and click on Close. In most cases, if it does not look like a normal Microsoft Windows Dialogue Box, it's probably not, but sometimes even if it does, be careful it may not be.

Install, use and update the following types of programs.
a firewall, an anti-virus program, an anti-spam program and a spyware removal tool. Many of these programs come bundled together as a suite of security tools. DO NOT settle for downloadable freebies, as most of them are AD-ware telling you that you are infected with security and performance problems and that paying them $29.95 will solve all your problems and create world peace. Instead purchase from a reputable company; prices are generally competitive and well worth the investment. Set these programs up for frequent automatic updates so that you have the most current protection available.

Some very reputable and useful programs to use are:
Spyware and Adware active protection, FREE Trial available Spy Sweeper by Webroot Software Inc.
Spyware, Adware & Virus active protection, FREE Trial available AVG Anti-Virus & Anti-Malware by Grisoft
Spyware, Adware & Virus active protection, Norton Internet Security by Symantec
Spyware, Adware & Virus active protection, McAfee Internet Security by McAfee
Spyware and Adware removal, FREE Ad-Aware by Lavasoft
Spyware and Adware removal, FREE Spybot - Search & Destroy by Patrick M. Kolla

*We suggest to use at least one of these programs or comparable software and to keep it updated on a regular basis. Altho we recommend the use of these programs listed here we can not guarantee the successful operation of them for every situation, therefore we must advise as with any software to use at your own risk.

Keep your operating system up to date.
Check with your operating system manufacturer for security patches and patch your computer as needed. Microsoft Windows is especially vulnerable and is exploited by hackers on a regular basis. You can set up Windows to automatically download updates by going to the start button and choosing programs/accessories/system tools/security center.

Use Microsoft Windows update to keep your windows operating system updated http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Use common sence.
Now that you have your system set with the security tools and software, teach everyone who uses your computer to use common sense. Dont open unsolicited email attachments, don't download freebies such as cool screensavers, don't get phished in by phony emails requesting personal information or passwords, use care with what you share via instant messaging, and don't post your email address on any website or forum. Using file sharing programs such as Kaza, Bearshare & Limewire is ricky because you really never know what you are downloading untill its too late. If you must post your email address use a format such as joeblow (at) website (dot) com so that email harvesting robots won't pick it up and add you to mass email mailing lists. When making online purchases, make sure you are directed to a secure payment site by looking for an 's' following the http portion of the address like this: https://www.website.com

Armed with common sense and the proper, regularly updated security components, your computer will be a less desirable target for the bad guys lurking on the net. As always, make backups of your data and dream up creative, difficult to crack passwords.
